View Full Version : question for you gear heads
will i hurt the engine in my pickup if add a couple of things to improve the intake side before i improve the exhaust side? i added a cold air intake and want to add an intake spacer before i do the exhaust. will i damage anything by having the extra air coming in without having an easier way for it to exit? just trying to keep up with you diesel guys :smashfreak:

No you wont hurt the engine but you also will not gain very much because you can only take in as much air as you can get rid of.
see, i knew you guys would know the answer :)
thanx JAP

JAP is correct. You will not damage anything and won't see much gain until you do all the mods.

And you still won't keep up with the oil burners.:D
i was waitin' on that one :)
i'm just hopin' i can at least keep you guys in sight instead of pluggin' along at 45mph most of the way to cottonwood.
any opinions on the "tuners" for gas motors? do they work as advertised or just junk? i know they don't produce earth shattering increases in hp like with the REAL trucks but many of them advertise 20-30hp increases. not too bad if it's true.

We did one on a friends 2001 dodge to make up for the oversize tires, and it was pretty impressive.
what brand of tuner did you use?
any suggestions on cat-back exhaust systems? i'm leaning towards gibson.....

I would contact 2FORCEFULL (STEVE) he owns an exhaust shop in vegas and I believe he did Gregs . Real nice guy and relly knows his stuff. I believe it is called BEST MUFFLER .
good point. i think he does flowmasters. not sure what other brands he does.
my gibson cat back should be here next week. look out D4$, i'm comin' after ya :)
the way i see it, the truck has 245hp from the factory. with the new CAI and cat-back, i should be running at least 246hp!!
put the exhaust on yesterday. SOUNDS GREAT!! haven't really driven it enough to tell if there is much difference in power but the throttle response feels better. it has a very deep rumble. next up.....modified throttle body and throttle body spacer.......

Be careful the 5.9 liter gas motors are known for cracking cylinder heads.

Sorry
GREAT!!!! just when i think i have a game plan :)
i'm not going to get to crazy. i put the spacer on, the throttlebody will get done in the next week or so. after that, i'll probably do high flow cats and a set of headers and call it quits. i wouldn't think that would lead to any cracked heads.........at least i hope not.
i guess this would be a good time to ask......what would cause the heads to crack? excess heat? excess pressure, like from forced induction?

I believe he has the 318. Also I don't play in that realm, but I have never heard of them cracking heads. Is it from heat or high power? At what level does this occur?
i do have the 5.9/360. i can tell a pretty big difference from the couple of mods i've done. i'm sure it's not enough to keep up with you diesel guys yet, but i'm working on it. the truck is actaully running 5-10 degrees cooler according to the gauge. i figure it's from the cold air intake pulling air from outside the engine compartment? i haven't decided if i'm going to run a programmer or not. if i can't use it when i'm pulling, it kind of defeats the purpose. but i'll cross that bridge when i get there.
