hay guys...
well this boat is just shrinking my pocket book so fast that its even become hard to find...
so i ask of you guys to help me out..
i need a loaner torque wrench from someone, i know i can go purchase one, but they are spendy, and iv never had a use for one untill now. seeing as money is tight right now, i need to cut corners any way i can... im sure some of you understand... im into this engine swap for almost 3k now, and this whole head gasket issue is already up into the 300+ range...
If needed im not oppose to bringing my boat to your driveway to torque them down, should only take a few mins.
Im on the southwest side of town, 215 and flamingo, and ill be out wrenching most of the day if someone knowledgeable has time to come and help manage the crew.
also - along that same note... is it imperative that i purchase a new head bolt set, or can i use the ones i just took out?
again, im so broke right now, i dont want to have to spend 80-100bucks on a set of head bolts if its not 100% necessary for this little mild engine.

well, the day couldnt get any worse...
i went to get the oil out of the pan this morning, only to find that my oil change vac pump isnt working... im going to look into it a bit more, maybe i can get it to work, but i dont think so...
so again, does anyone happen to have one of these i could barrow?

You know what BOAT stands for right? Bring On Another Thousand!!!!! I feel your pain but what ever you do...do it right, don't cut corners cuz it will always come back to bite ya!
Have you tried a local parts store? Sometimes they will rent tools...worth a try. I would try getting in touch with D4$ (Kurt) on here. He has all those kinds of tools and lives down your way. If you don't have his number let me know.
The good news is that you can reuse your head bolts and don't need new ones unless they are bad. Good luck!

the day is looking brighter...
first off- i got my vac working. the bottom seal plug fell out, so its working great now.
second - i got a buddy coming over for a meeting, he is going to bring his torque wrench with him, so i got that covered.
Heard from the shop this morn.. my intake gaskets are in, but the head gaskets wont arrive until about noon today, so i should have this engine sealed up by later tonight.
w00t.
maybe a trip to mead is still in the works for sat or sunday.

You need to torque the head gaskets 3 times. Torque them down wait 4-6 hours retorque them again, and then 24 hours later. This is for the head gaskets to seat properly and if there is any streach in the bolts. Also if you use any sealer/anti seeze on your studs your torque numbers will differ.

Thanks for everyones help and willingness to loan tools, i cant express how appreciative i am that all of you jumped right in to help me out...
i guess i have no choice but to let the lot of you drive my R/C boats and planes when i bring them out to the lake.
- anyway, i have got the heads installed per the manual i purchased. fallowed everything to a T, without mistake. even orderd and waited for the recommended printoseal gasket set from felpro (176 bucks for heads/intake).
i got the heads installed last night, then fiddle fuqed around with the rockers until i found that these are the non-adjustable setups.. (the manual didnt go into detail about this valvetrain setup that i have, fulcrum rail-guided) so now its just about getting everything else back on and hoping for the best. a few rockers have to be removed again, because i found a couple of slightly bent pushrods, i really cant tell they are bent until you roll them you can see they are slightly outa shape, however i have another set from the old block, as long as they are the same length (which they should be becuase he used the orig rods to build this engine) i just dont know if head/block work was ever done to the point where they need to be the longer .060 replacment version. we will find that out today.
i did fallow a 4step torquing process per the manual. however it didnt give me a time frame to do complete that process, however i will go back and check torque after its first fire..
here are some pics of last nights boat party, im also including some images of the start of the head problem.
AND YES - THAT IS MY FAT ASS STANDING THERE if your wondering... and yes im going bald at 25.... :/

Did you see any signs on the old head gaskets were they had failed and allowed water into the block? When is the next lake test? Good job on the documentation with the pics!

yes,i believe i saw two spots where the gaskets had failed, however im not possitive that it was dumping into the oil directly, seems more like into the cyl, however im not good enough to really tell unless its blatantly obvious, which nothing looked extreamly wrong..
Im leaning towrd the comment made on the other topic by fun4me?, i think...
i believe this cam has more overlap, which supposedly will cause water in the oil, since i didnt adjust the T valve on this engine, it could have been sucking from the headers, this is what my partner has concluded, however when we checked the oil earlier that day, it didnt look milky at all :dunno: none the less, the T valve has always been adjusted to have almost no water passing at idle (drops from the weeps every 8-10 secs) either way, i readjusted it (ready for testing when i fire it.) and installed a new ball valve to control the discharge flow.
i got the engine finished today, im hoping to have it in the water sometime next week, or that weekend. :D

I would go out too if I only had a radio for my RC sailboat but no such luck...:crying:
Just messing with ya. Good talking to you the other day. I am leaving for another trip tomorrow night and will be back on the 29th - 30th sometime. Good luck with the boat Benjamin, it is about time you get it running or get an outboard engine (you know, the kind that was designed for use on a boat and not an old truck kind of motor....:D...)
Talk to you when I get back in town..

Damn, that took me a second, I'm not used to such a witty remark coming out of ol' T&B.
Edit: Never mind, I thought Mark had smacked Kim with the you've gotta quit smoking comment referencing his 2 stroke outboards, turns out he saw the pack of smokes in Wicked's pocket.

Wicked - Fun4me's comment referred to a jet. I don't believe that you would have a T valve on an I/O. You might want to check the specs on that cam though. If you have more than about 112° centerline angle that may be your problem. With anything more than that you will get "reversion" or sucking of water back into the cylinders. But the common problem with that is that is gets water in the cylinders, not the oil.
What about your oil cooler? Have you checked that to make sure there aren't any leaks or internal problems with that? If your cooler was bad, that would produce the issue you have.

what brand of headers are you running? if they are Bassett or Rewarder they will need the "T" valve with the spring and ball inside. if you need one I have an old one you can have. just pm me your address and Ill send it to you.

yes, ihave a T valve with the spring.
Im unsure who made the headers, there is nothing on them anywhere that i have been able to find, however it does have the T valve with the ball/spring.

well, i got the engine put back together now.. ran a prime and didnt see any leaks thus far, we will wait to see once the oils flowing warm.
i should be able to fire it tomorrow, i picked up the wrong thermo housing gasket, so i gota go get another one, also going to blockoff the mechanical fuel pump, and run new water hose to the headers.
ill post up some images tomorrow, and maybe some video...
