View Full Version : WhisAlert install

I saw this gizmo touted in Powerboat, so I checked it out. 34 bucks, and it should help keep us from pouring gas on our flipflops when the tank is full. It came last week after a bit of delay. Since it came from New England, they probably figured we weren't ready to boat yet, what with all the snow and ice:headshake:
Anyway, I got it, and I can put it in, but haven't yet.
The part is made of plastic, and comes with two hose clamps to mount it on the fill vent. When you blow into the "to tank" end, it whistles rather loudly - seems like it should work. :thumb:
Here's the theory - when the air flows out of the tank via the vent, it will cause the whistle to make noise. As the gas tank gets full, the whistling will change tone, alerting you that the tank is almost full. You then stop filling and don't spill gas.
The install is so simple, the instructions are on the box:chin_scratch: I just have to get into the helm console again and twist every which way, so I saved that project for later.

First problem I see is that there isn't room to double clamp each end as required by the USCG for fuel...
Wouldn't want some cheap plastic that will crack (too much flex area) in my boat, gas fumes or gas & spark = Boom!

I've seen these and agree with Panic Button ... if you stand close to your vent you can hear when the gas gets close to top off anyway ... or put your kid or wife in the boat and have them flip the key on and then off to see the fuel gauge ... always good on larger engines to turn the key on, then off, then again on, and off as the fuel pump will prime the reservoir and not be pulling fuel while you are cranking away to start the engine(s).

And no double clamp - I didn't even think of that.
She can't hear the gas gurgle, that's why we keep spilling. It could be because it is so hard to hear with your mouth open, if you catch my drift.
Anyway, the material seems to be sound, and the area in which it goes is a straight shot from tank to vent. The key on thingie may be the best idea.:Thanx:

The whistle is loud, you'd hear it. I'm not sure if a low boat with a short fuel fill vent hose would be able to use this, though. It says in the insturctions to place it as far up on the hose as possible to give yourself more time to react and shut it off.
Note, this thing is not "automatic", you still have to physically stop the gas flow yourself.

I'm just sayin' I can stand there and look down in the fill hole.

I keep it simple - when the $ amount on the fuel pump goes back to $0,-, I have enough for the week end...:eek3::eek3:

The prices have been changing too fast for that.... Last year, we put in $75 at Smith's and we were good for the day. This year, bigger boat that takes premium, and we've put $200 in it for the day. Next time, we only put in $110.
I think if she put her ear to the vent hole, she'd hear the gas come out...... er, if she'd listen:rollinglaugh:

The pump got three digits, when it try to roll over ($1000,-) I have a full tank, these fuelprices makes it so easy...

I think it's one 250 gallon tank.

It's $1000+ each weekend when we head out this year. I'd love to have the $700 fill ups from last year... $110 won't even move a needle on 1 tank.

You're right! 245 gallons of fuel and 5 gallons of good smelling old school two stroke oil. :eek3:
