I have a co-worker who owns a speedboat and he blew his engine on the lake last year. He got quoted $1k for labor for replacement by a guy he knows who would do it in his garage. I said it was as great deal. Am I right?

Its and I/O, not sure the length of the boat (have not seen it yet), I am thinking it would take somewhere between 15 and 20 hours total to do. Then block/parts, what maybe 2-3 grand more? I am assuming he is just replacing the entire long block.

I said it was as great deal. Am I right? If not, know of anyone who will do it for cheaper for him?

Depends on the boat... I've changed a motor by myself (D4$ in the backhoe) in about 5 hours. That was pulling the old one and stabbing the new one, figure another 3-4 hours to hook up and double check everything. $1000 seems wayyyy to expensive to pull a motor.

Depends on the motor what it will cost. Stock Chevy big blocks (long block) start at $6000 and go up from there, small blocks about $3500 and up. Look at www.1800runsnew.com I've bought a few from there.

He's looking at a grand for labor only to rebuild the old motor right? Probably about the going rate. Make sure he remembers he gets what he pays for. I've had two motors built by buddies and both blew after 10 hours. Second time got me a free rebuild, 4-5 hours so far so we'll see. You might want to get in touch with Gary/Trouble maker here on the board. He's a good guy and does some work in his garage also. If he's in town that is he occasionally takes vacations to Iraq.

Any suggestions here are from experienced, knowledgable and talented guys. Kind of like hearing the Gospel. Good luck with your buddy's boat.:drinkers:

Depending on the boat, Red N Vegas and I can have it out in 45 minutes and back in running in an hour. We had plenty of practice in his boat.

1000 seems like a good deal, however make sure he knows what he is doing. There are lots of people that SAY they know how to rebuild an engine. There is an art to it. I would do like Chris (panic button) did and buy rebuilt so you know, or have Gary do it. There is nothing like drifiting around in the middle of the lake on a Sunday evening having plenty of time to think about the extra money you could have spent to do it right. Now, everyone else is on the trailer, your paddeling, the kids are cranky, the wife is bitching and your pissed. :lookaround:

And blown up again in just one more hour right?

Pulling the motor and replacing if for $1k is a little steep, IMHO. Be very careful on who you choose to rebuild a marine engine...the tolerances are different for marine than a car not to mention things like head gaskets, etc. Car engines don't run at 5000+ rpm's for most of their life. Also, they run cooler than car motors, hence the diffences in tolerances. If you are looking for someone to rebuild a motor for a boat...call Gary (aka Trouble Maker) here on the boards. He helped me rebuild mine 2 yrs ago and I have not had one problem!

You typically get what you pay for when trying to do on the cheap, unless you really know the rebuilder be careful. Same can be said for the expensive guys ... I've been raped a few times by those that supposedly know their stuff.

$1k is about right to pull and put back together depending on difficulty of unbolting and getting to it ... if you are looking for a shop who knows their stuff and guarantees the work talk to Frank at Boulder City Marine (702-293-5838) ... carbuerated or EFI ... $1k is about 10+ hours of labor and sometimes it takes 1/2 or so of that to reconnect and test everything.

He has pulled mine and put all back together correctly, and when a problem is on the water with you diagnosing and fixing.
