Man Drowned at Lake Mead National Recreation Area
A 26-year old man drowned at Boxcar Cove in Lake Mead. The man was spending some time at the lake with friends when he decided to go swimming at 9:30 a.m. on August 10, 2002. About ½ hour after he entered the water, the friends noticed that he was missing and immediately called for assistance. National Park Service rangers were dispatched to the scene at 10:06 a.m., and started CPR immediately, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:39 a.m. He was not wearing a life jacket at the time. The National Park Service is investigating the incident.
Superintendent William K. Dickinson cautions visitors to always wear a life jacket when boating or swimming at Lake Mead. None of the drowning victims this year was wearing a life jacket, and it is quite likely that doing so would have saved their lives.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a unit of the National Park Service.
