One Man Missing and Presumed Drowned at Lake Mead National Recreation Area
A 42-year old Las Vegas man is missing and presumed drowned in Lake Mead. At
10:35 p.m. on August 2, 2002, a group of family and friends were finishing their day on the lake and had headed towards Callville Bay Marina. The man jumped from the boat so that he could go swimming. The family heard his cries of distress, but by the time they were able to turn the boat back around, he had disappeared from view. He was not were wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
National Park Service rangers were dispatched to the scene at 10:45 p.m. and initiated an immediate search, which included an air search by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police helicopter. The exact location where the man was swimming is difficult to pinpoint, but water depths in the area ranged from 50 to 250 feet deep. Another search of both the shoreline and the water was initiated this morning.
The National Park Service is investigating the accident.
