Well it's what I thought it was. Took the boat over and had it listened to, the motor is broke pretty bad. Sounds like a rod or the crank, I'm guessing a rod, maybe even two. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif Have a buddy across the street from the pump guy and he said he should be able to get it rebuilt for me within two weeks, so we should be a go for fathers day, but its gonna cost at least a grand or so. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif Oh well.

I'm really thinking about it, but I don't want to spend too much more money on it, I really want to move up in size in the next year or so. I just want a good reliable motor that starts and runs every time, it doesn't need to be a rocket, but bullet proof would be nice.

Like I said in the first post a buddy of sorts (a friend of and ex girlfriends brother) has an automotive shop and is a pretty good guy. He builds all sorts of race shit and has a sweet old Kona he says will do 70ish. I'm gonna pull most stuff apart take it over next week and have him pull the block out and rebuild whatever needs rebuilding. Prolly tear into it tomorrow and hope to find out a little more about what went wrong. I have an idea already. I have one exhaust flapper that has on occasion stuck open. Looked at it today and it was open, it just takes a light tap to close it but it may have stuck open and allowed some water in, reversion. With this happening right after slowing down this may be the case, however the sticking flapper side was on the outside or high side of the turn but maybe after the turn and I settled into the water is when it happened. Idunno.

I know you said that the problem was on the bottom end, but make sure that you check the valves in the heads as well. You never know...you may have bent a valve or two in the reversion process. Also, you might want to fix that flapper so that this won't happen again. One good thing. The inside of the motor look good and clean. But all it takes is one weak link no matter how good the rest of it is huh?? I had the same problem with my jet pump shaft. It was the weak link.

Far as I can tell the pistons look good, cylinder walls look good, valves, push rods etc. Â*Not sure what the shavings in the top end are, looks like bearing material to me. Â*When I rebuilt the motor two years ago the guy I had doing the work suggested I go with a forged crank and rods, I didn't want to spend the extra cash, now I wish I had. Wasn't on the water cause I tole you fockers I wouldn't be long before the weekend...we had stuff to do with the new house...it was either boat Friday or boat Saturday and we Friday's as the crowds are less! Vapor lock is the determination by bothe Savage Marine and Mercury Marine's tech support. Boat ran just fine when we put it on the trailer.
The kinda' neat thing is...it was quite a pleasant ride back being towed...$300 bucks but getting to sit up in the bow of the boat sippin' a cold one and playing with the new sound level meter measuring the passing boats was kinda' nice. Now to take my thread back from you jackers, still trying to get all the parts together. Looks like I may have procured them all today. Its gonna take about a week for the crank, maybe by the end of this week I hope I hope I hope, $500. Upon further inspection we did get into the bottom of one piston, Summit says they will sell me just the one, $50. About $100 to rebalance everything, and a set of gaskets. I may come in at $699 or less after all Kev. I just hope I can get everything together quick enough. Gawd I hate throwing something together and not having time to test it out a little bit, but if I have to I will. Wish I would have replaced this crank in '02, when we rebuilt the motor, with a stroked one. Damn, maybe next time. Just hope its not in this boat. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Hell, you can do it...you're young and can work on it around the clock, right? We used to change-out rods and pistons and cranks in hours at the dragstrip. Ever been through a "tear-down" at a National Event for Stock or Superstock class? They make you put a piston and rod on the table for the inspectors to check. Usually a cylinder head as well. Usually they tear down the top qualifiers and random other cars running below their indexes. Not fun. Been there done that a few times. makes for a long day.
Just be careful to put it back together with no extra parts left over and you'll be okay.
