So I take off from here a few minutes late to meet up with the McD clan, but not bad. Talk to kev when I'm just coming into Victorville. He's maybe a half hour ahead of me we are gonna meet at a gas station in Barstow, says he'll wait, no prob. Get off the phone with him and I looked in the mirror and think I see a spark, I keep looking and I see another one, coming from the left trailer wheel! Pull over and the bearings are toasted! Wheel is about to fall off! Managed to limp the next mile or so off of the freeway. Pull the wheel off luckily the bearings hadn't welded themselves to the spindle. Just missed the guy at Autozone by half and hour, told him I'd give him $50 to stay, he split. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif Anyway we got a room and replaced the bearings in the morning with NAPA parts (thats where Danielle works couldn't stand the fact I was calling Autozone to begin with) by then it was around noon, I said forget it lets just go home. Lost the bearing buddy cap thing last October on the way home replaced them, but it was missing again this time. When I put the seal in on the back side of the hub it just slipped right in. It should be a hammer in thing. Looks like the hub has a few small cracks in it and is either letting the greese out or water in or both. Of course this dealio messed up the spindle so now that needs replacing, along with the hub. Screw it I'd like to just replace the whole trailer, maybe a new Extreme?!?! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif All in all it was an F ed up trip, the only thing that could have been worse is if it had happened way out in the middle of no where. So I guess what come around goes around, after all the smack I talked to McD about Smoke on the water last month, I got some coming my way. Bring it on McD!! The worst part is, I was the firewood guy, sorry guys hope you were able to find some somewhere. Glad I had it with me though as I needed it to block up the trailer while I had it jacked up.

Sorry about the trailer problems Brandon. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif Your crew stopped by the sand bar yesterday to hang out for a few minutes and told me about your misfortunes. I guess the new Carlisle tire I blew out on the way to the lake Friday was not too big of a deal now!

Yeah it was no fun spending the night in Victorville, (right Greg?), had to get a new tire also, I guess the heat must have blistered it or something. Cool part is they have changed tread patterns since my original purchace and after two non repairable flats and this dealio I now have all three tires the same again.

That sux. I've had my share of trailer problems in the past. I'm now glad I don't tow often over 4 miles. And then I check the grease before every tow.

Hey B-Rad,
with the Carlisles is not if but when will they blow.
Our trailer was two seasons old last year and we lost 4 of 6 Carlisles within 6 weeks. My buddy lost 3 of 4 on his Rage (same year). I think T&B and several others have had the same issues with these.
They did send me 7 new tires and a rim with no questions asked. Hmmmmm?
Guess I'll wait until the first one blows and then replace them all with Goodyears http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/insane.gif

We've owned our Extreme trailer since 2000 and have not lost a Carlisle tire. Before we moved the trailer and boat to LHC we towed back and forth from Los Angeles to Havasu, Mead or Mohave with a trip to Bishop thrown in. What I don't do is roar down the highway at 80 like some folks do while they're towing (no offense to anyone here!http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif and I check tire pressure every time I tow. I generally look over the trailer at every stop and if necessary top off the tires with a portable compressor that is always in the truck. Knock on wood... the Carlisle's have been fine. Trailer has always been stored indoors and liberal amounts of ArmorAll used on the sidewalls just for grins.

Sorry bout your trip. My dad and I had a similar experience on the side of some Minnesota road a few years ago. The bearings DID melt to the spindle...not an easy fix on the side of some road. Luckily we were able to tie down the spindle to the frame and limp home on 3 wheels.

Little advice beside the obvious "grease your bearings". If you think that your brakes are sticking, even the slightest amount, don't chance it...pull the shoes. My dad said that the faint squeeking noise coming from his drum was "no big deal"...he'd fix it when we got home. My assss. We had a damn bon fire coming from that wheel in about 1/2 hour http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif . Sticking brakes equal heat which cooked the grease then bearings...you know the rest.

I know some peeps who carry a whole spindle, bearings and hub mounted right to the spare tire. They are not very expensive and pretty easy to change on the side of the road. Just for kicks I stoped by Extreme today. 4k for a new tandem trailer, with brakes. What do you all think, would it help to build value in the boat for a future sale or would it not really be worth it, just fix what I got or maybe a cheaper new trailer. Curent one is a single axle Vanson, with some damage to the rear where it nailed the ground, (previous owner) it could use a little TLC, sorta like McD gave his last year. Hey Kev you wanna make a few bucks? http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I thought the spindles were bolted on but I looked at mine tonite and they are welded too. I guess it wouldn't be an easy fix unless you had the underhood welding system. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/ohboy.gif

I don't think you would get your money back by buying a new trailer. Most buyers barely look at the trailer unless it is a serious hunk of junk.

you will NOT get your money back when/if you go to sell later. if you are even somewhat considering selling/trading your current ride, i would fix what needs fixing without going overboard. if you are interested in keeping your boat for long time it may be worth the $$ for sweet trailer. i was very seriously considering a new trailer for the nordic right up until the time we bought the daytona.

I know I wouldn't get all of my money back, but if it would add say 2k to the value as opposed to spending a grand on refurbishing or buying a cheaper trailer @ 2k maybe it would be worth it. The current trailer is not quite a hunk of junk but could use some work, and is only a single axle without brakes. Right now the plan is a new ride in a year or two. As is the boat should be worth around 13k. I've seen them for sale for that amount anyway.

PH - Sorry...I don't have time to restore anything right now. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif I wouldn't recommend buying a new one either. A new trailer won't do anything for the sale price of your boat down the road. I would recommend just getting a new axel, that way you know it is straight and then take it to a shop and have it sandblasted and painted. Then you have a great looking trailer for a fraction of the cost. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

If it is not bent and you can slide the bearing races on it without a lot of slop, it should be fine. If it has big burrs on it you may be able to take a file and sandpaper to it to clean it up. The bearings don't run on the spindle so it doesn't have to be perfect.

Oh by the way, Pacific Trailer in Chino is awesome. After going to Kustom Trailer in Rancho, Arrow in Ontario, neither one had anything, the guy at Kustom tried to get me to take a used one that was too long, Arrow could order it and have it in a week. Pacific made me a new one while I went to lunch! $200, new hubs bearing seals, everything. They would have painted it if I wanted to wait a bit, told them forget about it I'll spray it myself, gonna do that total refurbish this winter anyway.
