View Full Version : Which launch is best???

So Callville is out till the road is finished. The wife does not like Hemmingway because she has a hard time backing it in at the angle there. I have not been to Las Vegas Bay or any on the upper end of the lake.

So where is everyone launching from??

Easy road, good ramp etc..

I like moabi, but those lane dividers have to go. My buddy has a trailer there and keeps his Tritoon and his new DCB there. Nice park. He has been bugging for a while to get a place there.

so where is moabi?? it's part of havasu right? what's the drive time like from vegas? anyone been to willow lately? the road going into echo isn't exactly pristine but the ramp is good. i've never launched from overton but i believe t&b launches from there whenever he's on mead.

Moabi is NOT part of Lake Havasu but is ON the Colorado River above Lake Havasu.

its all good

[QUOTE]The wife does not like Hemmingway because she has a hard time backing it in at the angle there. Your wife backs up the boat? You are a lucky man. Have not been to the lower basin ramps with water so low, as James said road to Echo not great , but the ramp is decent, also Overton is a great launch and t&b does launch there with his boat without any problems.Willow beach ramp looked good as of last week in feburary.

She will get used to Hemmenway. Mine did. She backs up in between two others and leaves plenty of room. She rocks.

Bill, the easiest way to do it is for you to back the boat up to just before the water. Then, have her back it in the rest of the way. Trust me, she will do fine.

Lake Mead Marina is the place that everyone is using these days dude. Its the Marina just down the road from Hemenway. It has a perfect angle and lots of room to manuever. Its not quite as wide as Calleville use to be but 6 to eight boats have launched at once if people know thier stuff. Theres parking directly above the ramp on dirt or you can pull back around to the front of the Marina where you came in and park there. I have no problem launching my 38 Special. The best part of all is there is no long hard uphill walk to get your trailer. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif I have launched there the last two Sundays and there was a crowd if you waited late.

I think I saw a sign for that launch if you went straight after the pay booth instead of turning left towards Callville. Am I right?

Revolver is right ... Lake Mead Marina is best. Paved down into the water, no potholes or submerged spots to watch out for, they continually dredge or grade to keep it working well for 4-6 boats to launch at once, lots of parking for trailers and no uphill climb when the day is done, a new paved area for 20-30 boats to wipe down at the end of the day, and a decent restaurant and bar + store for the essentials you forgot when heading out the door. My only complaint is that about mid-day on busy weekends the water cops are patroling in force and lining up boats for ticketing ... sometimes unnecessarily (i.e., when I get a ticket http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif).

PS -- My wife is comfortable driving the trailer in and out of there, and this season I taught my 12 year old to do same ... he's probably too comfortable, but good at it as well).

If you were coming in from Henderson, yes you keep going straight another 7 miles or so and you will see the Marina after you pass the Water Districts Projects. If you go on from there you will pass Hemenway Harbor and another pay booth. This pay booth is the one just below Boulder City.
You could come in from Boulder City and You would pass Hemenway and then arrive at Lake Mead Marina after passing the swim beach and campground. I think its less than two miles from Hemenway.

I get it now, I know where it is.

Have you seen many patrol boats hanging around there?

And how crowded is it on a Sunday afternoon?

I launched 3 Sundays ago and there were about 6-8 boats in line around 9:00am. Waited maybe 5 minutes. Two Sundays ago it was almost deserted around the same time. You'll see anywhere from 5-6 to 10-12 boats moving in and out around noonish or so. It moves pretty fast for 4-5 folks can be putting in and out at the same time. Pretty courteous folks for the most part.

As to water cops, and the ones that are registered to give noise tickets as we have 3 types patrolling Mead: AZ cops, NV cops, and I forget the term ... Fish and Game? ... the only one that gives out noise tickets. The others call Fish and Game and report an infraction for ticketing. It also seems that the houseboaters and those that live on their boats in the marina get pissed a few times over the summer and call to complain ... brings the noise cops out. I have only seen them lining up boats in a frenzy on the main weekends (4th of July, Memorial Day, etc.) and have not seen them out yet this year. I'm way too loud, but am putting off muffler systems as well until the technology improves a bit re: power loss or potential engine damage from backpressure created. Have received one warning up by Sandy Cove during a regular life-jacket and safety gear inspection, and one ticket as I was pulling back into Lake Mead Marina in late afternoon over the entire last season, and both on really crazy Sundays when it seemed like the lake was full of boats. Cop was nice and apologetic that he had to write the ticket, and the Judge talked boats with me when I went to contest and reduced the fine to simple court costs ... over $100 to $35 I think? I can pay that 20-30 times before I incur the cost of a good set of permanent silencers.

TMF is right on this one. The houseboaters are the ones who complain about the noise. They have most of the houseboats moored directly next to the exit in the no wake zone leading to open water. Everything has to go right by them and they are not used to so much traffic. Since Calleville has had all of the construction going on most people have chosen this marina as the best launch site. Lake Mead Marina was usaually the last place anyone would want to launch from. The ramp that everyone is using now was under water for 35 years. Since the water has dropped it left the ramp that was considered one of the best on the lake high and dry. When the water rises again the new ramp that they are building will be good but not as good as Calleville. The main thing thats good about Calleville is that it has a very good drop angle. This also makes for a very good hike up hill http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif
Maybe if the houseboaters complain enough they will move thier dock to the other side if the marina http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

How far out is Overton from town?

THOR

F&^% the houseboaters. It is the old women that complain because their hearing aids are tweaking when the the killer big blocks are firing up, and, in the mean time, their husbands are out on the deck jerking off to our killer rides. Put you fingers in your ears if you dont want to hear it, I will pass you in 2 seconds and you'll never see me again (unless your are sitting on a 30/60 table at the Mirage).

Its about 1 hour from Calleville. The road sucks after Redstone, lots of dips and narrow turns. Overton has all new docks and is sprawling.

i've driven northshore road from callville up to overton. i'll NEVER do that again. i'll take the 15 up to the overton turn-off and come back down to the launch ramp. the freeway is in very good shape, and the road from the freeway through overton is all new so it's in very good shape also. i don't really want to drive for an hour every time i go to the water but i will to avoid the mess at callville. depending on how dylan reacts to the lake, we'll start doing what D4$ does......head out to the lake on saturday, camp on the water and come back sunday.
