For those out or adjacent to Van Nuys, Ca, I took my boat there for a 100 hour service. I was really impressed by the quality and extent of service performed. They are one of the few Premiere ranked Mercury Marine service centers in Southern California. They did it right and on time.

Their 100 hour service includes (sure to forget a few things here):

Full drive service (pressure test the seals, gear fluid change, send the lube out for analysis, drive alignment, trim indicator alignment, tighten steering components, full lube job on all bearings and moving parts, check U-Joint, new prop nut and star washer, retorque all bolts, etc....)

Full engine service (change oil & filter, send oil out for analysis, check all systems with computerized equipment, clean air filter, treat gas tank with stabilizer, new spark plugs, readjust throttle, drive cables, back flush cooling system including disassembling the heat exhanger and flushing that, flush oil cooler, replace seawater impeller, top off and bleed all hydrolic systems as needed, retorque various fasteners/nuts, change fuel filter and water seperator, check fuel pressure, lube engine coupler, check alternator for proper function, etc......They also dyno the motor at the prop shaft)

I also kicked in for a Teague sea strainer. I figure its cheap insurance and it also keeps the water impeller from running dry at startup.

They also lent me a few labbed props to try for no charge.....

Big thumbs up to Eric at this shop. He also does technical articles for Family & Performance magazine and will be featuring a full 100 hours service on a 496HO (my motor will be in the mag in a month or two)

I enjoy reading those write-ups. I think last month they gave step-by-step instructions on how to install an isolator and explained why it was a nice addition to a boat with a big stereo.

RC How much did that 100 hour service hurt your annual budget? I'm in Simi so for what I choose not to do in the driveway someone's got to handle it. I have heard good about Maverick before as well.

It wasnt cheap! But I had them change the seawater impeller.

OK for the sake of comparison. Sunday morning changed the oil on a buddies Hallett in the driveway, 6 qts and a fram filter about $15. Drive oil 2 qts, don't remember cost, wasn't outrageous, genuine merc fluid. Fuel water seperator, cheap. Lube trailer brgs etc, set timing, fabricate throttle linkage for new carb. Out of pocket maybe $100....
What begs my question is when mine hits its 20 and 100 hr marks how much I'm gonna get hurt?
There is more to be done at such intervals than we can accomplish in driveway yes/no?

I know they align the drive on the 20hr service as well as the basic filter and fluid changes. If I remember correctly (I'm probably not) Shockwave charged around $300 for the 20hr service http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I have done my annual service (less than 100 hrs as I only have 92 hours on the boat in 4 seasons) at Essex, Teague Marine and the last 2 services at Savage Marine in LHC. All charged about the same for the same work...right around $400 including replacing the impeller and aligning the drive. Seems to be the going price for this level of work.

$3-400 is what I pay for similar. Seems like Rivercrazy is getting more ...

Sending out engine and drive oil for analysis
Dynoing from the prop
Trim indicator alignment
Readjust throttle and drive cable
Retorque all bolts, nuts, and etc.

Also, how much for the sea strainer part and install?

I paid about 2X what TooMuchFun referred to. The seawater impeller kicked the price up by about $250. Part of the higher price was also the Merc designated spark plugs. They charge an arm & a leg for those X8.. They also disassembled the exhaust system to check the condition of the hoses because it ran without water going through the exhaust for about 45 seconds.

The sea strainer is from Teague Marine and the unit with the fittings was about $450 plus about $200 for installation.

I figure if the strainer saves me one emergency impeller change that it was worth the dough....

I would not normally kick out this much for routine maintenance but they really did go over every fine detail and completely through all the systems. I do my own basic service evey 30 hours on the drive and engine.

Peace of mind is worth the dough.
