All right, I broke down and bought myself a GPS unit, now what the hell do I do with it? Other than tell MPH, what do you use them for?

Mark locations, track distance, find your way, time to destination, all kinds of stuff. I use the hell out of mine. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

All kidding aside, I can show you how to really use that thing. Garmin does have a pretty good tutorial that comes with it.
Next time out on the water when you launch, mark that point and reset the trip computer. You will be amazed at how far you go, the time spent running and just sitting in one spot. You can also find out how fast you went that day. One day just cruising around we went over 80 miles. Kinda lets you know where your gas goes. Plus if you go somewhere during the day and use the track back feature at night, dont have to worry about rocks or running aground. Unless you did earlier that day. Neat little toy. Every boater should have one. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

I have gotten a few off of that website.
I also like to use it to track how far the water has gone down. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Get the topo maps and download into the GPS, that way you can see how far fingers go base dupon lake levels.
There is no way I would go to Powell without one, in fact I want a bigger screen than my two hand helds have on them.

I need to spend more time on the tutorial, I have not found where I can add cordinates. The trip computer is a pretty cool tool though. I need to spend more time also figuring out the mapping.

Just play with it for a while and you'll have it all figured out in no time at all http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

There's only one flaw: it'll show you how fast your boat REALLY goes... http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Next time you're kickin' back in a cove pull out the manual and play with it a bit. The GPS, that is. That's the best way to learn about what it can do.

I couldn't agree more http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif It just takes a little time to get familar with all the functions. Bring along plenty of extra batteries when you're trying to figure it all out. I have a Garmin Map 176C and though this is my third GPS it still took some time to feel comfortable navigating with it http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I have an older Garmin GPS III+ and it's a handheld device that I wish I could mount in some manner in order to not have to drive one handed or try to grip the wheel and the GPS simultaneously. No holes or "stick-on" crap wanted. Next boat will have a GPS speedo built in.

I saw Beer Hunter use his Garmin 176C quite effectively during last Saturday's run to/from Catalina. Its value is obvious to me (navigation and speed as a bonus).
Question: what makes and models are the ones installed in performance boats (when boat makers install them in the helm, what makes/models are used)? I found handheld and portable units all over the Internet but can't seem to find the ones that would be installed (not the mega-buck units for yachts).
Thanks

You can probably have your manufacturer build in anything you want. Check out Garmin.com and get a feel for what's out there.

MMD, the dash space on most medium sized performance boats (including the Tremor) is usually quite limited. As Essex502 said, the boat manufacturer could probably build you almost anything but it might not be worth it. Talk with them concerning your ideas and the may have some possible solutions http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Currently the Garmin Map 176 series is the largest full screen portable unit available but you might find a fixed mount unit that is only slightly larger http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif You may want to check out Boat US or West Marine or some of the gps manufacturer’s websites to see what's available. Good luck http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

OK, so I bought a Garmin 2610, it's their brand new model with remote, voice prompts, and more. Â*My wife is using it in her car now and it's awesome - we put a 256Mb card in it (it's removable) and can be used off-road and on the water (buy and download the bluewater charts). Â*This thing is awesome on the road and should do the trick on the water too. Â*(List is $1160 - bought it online for $800).

Certainly not a 34 but I am LOOKING at the 30. After going to Catalina with Beer H and the rest of the LVHB-OC region boaters I realized that getting the boat salty is a very good idea (a lot closer and less driving than the river which means more hours in the water). And salty likes bigger boats so I'm LOOKING.
Doesn't mean I'm buying but I will look closer at the 29 Magnatude too. I'm hoping Barry makes the extra four feet a less than huge step up in price. Of course I'd like a bigger set of hamsters under the hood so that'll cost a lot more. Well, I can dream can't I?
