All previous truck jokes aside, does anyone have any opinions on the Dodge full size, ext cab trucks? Â*I'd prefer the Chevy's but my brother in law get's these unreal, below list prices on Dodges. Â*He works for Chrysler so he get's me the "employee purchase price" which is 3% below dealer list (not msrp, list). Basically, the participating dealer takes a 3% loss on the sale then the factory reimburses them. Â*It's hard to pass this deal up WITH 0% financing but I'm not a huge Dodge truck fan. Â*Usually, this would be a no brainer but since all makers are slashing prices and rates, the savings aren't as dramatic as usual. Â*Any thoughts...?

I beat the piss out of my '97 3500 and it wanted more! If you are going fullsize get the Cummins, it won't quit. I bought a Ford this time but only because Dodge doesn't or won't build a decent four door. It will not ride as nice as the Chevy but it will out work it and the Cummins gets pretty good mileage.

I have a 01 Dodge 4x4 and have had zero problems mechanical out of it. I took it in the the dealer for some nitpicky things that I would notice (inside trim items) but other than that it has been bulllet proof. I go offroad in it, use it like a truck and have tow at rated capacity (#7600) for 1500 miles at 70 MPH and never skipped a beat. It is a gas short bed with heavy duty service group and they only thing I wish I would have gotten is the Cummins. I have been real happy with it and would buy another one just like it.

2000 3/4T quad cab 4x4 V10, 2" lift, 33" MT's, 48K miles and absolutely NO PROBLEMS!! We love this truck and plan on another one when the miles get up near 100k on this one. Nothing but good things to say about these trucks. Tows the 6500lb. boat/ trailer really well. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I had a 98 that with the exception of going through brakes, had no other problems. I think that they have beefed up the size of brakes since then and the new body styles are pretty nice.

Yeah, they did beef up the brakes. I replaced my fronts at 30k and still probably had at least a few thousand miles left on them http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Dodge has traditionally had problems with their brakes. While not a full size truck, my Dakota has had the rotors replaced twice and turned twice (4 services) in 48K miles. That along with 4 sets of pads. No replacements of the rear drums. From the Dakota forum boards I am told this is also a problem with the full sized trucks as well. Daimler-Chrysler says no abnormal issues are involved but there are hundreds of posts on the Dakota boards about this. I don't drive it much on city streets - mostly freeway/highway. I have (as have others) written numerous letters to Dodge and Daimler to no avail. They just don't care as long as the trucks are selling. I even went as far as to use cryogenically frozen rotors the last time with no improvement. The experts at this are saying that the real issues inadequate sized rotors (thickness) and less than optimum brake pad material. I just replaced the pads and had the rotors turned this past Saturday (4th service) and used what the Dakota forum recommended which was the Raybestos ceramic pads and the Powerslot slotted and drilled rotors. We'll see if the problem disappears.
Other than the brakes the truck is fantastic. It pulls the Essex boat and trailer but struggles a little on long, steep hills such as the Baker grade or the I40 near Needles. Had no difficulty with the I15 and the Cajon Pass last year. It does tend to heat a little on 100° days pulling up those grades which indicates maybe the radiator is marginal for the towing capacity it is rated (7,000). On less heated days, I just drop the truck out of overdrive and sometimes down one more gear and motor up the grade.
Overall...I'd say the Dodge has been very good with great mileage except for the brakes. Replace yours when the need it with slotted and drilled rotors and Raybestos ceramic pads and you'll end up with a fine tow vehicle.
BTW....get the Cummins if you're gonna' tow as it can pull a house.
My $0.02 worth.
See this for more on brakes (http://dodgedakotas.com)

The new '03 Dodge 2500/3500 is a bitchen truck. Awesome brakes, much better steering/suspension than last year. 2 real doors and 2 almost real doors, more rear leg room and a quiet Cummins. Can't beat it.

I have both that's why I'm trying to get rid of the S-10.
It's just sitting behind my house not doing anything.
Actually I drove it last week because I had to get my windshield replaced in the Dodge. Â*
Still runs like a champ if anyone wants to know, like those people who tow their boats with a car. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I used to tow my Sanger flat bottom with a lowered 87 5.0 Mustang with low profile tires and Enke wheels. That was a sweet setup.

Yeah, same here. One time I was driving up to Clear Lake with a friend and the mustang's top down and the boat behind me. I'm feeling like I own the world. 21 years old, killer boat, killer car, on my way to the lake for Memorial Day Weekend, planning on chasing tail all weekend...life couldn't be better. Then, the traffic on the freeway just stopped and I wasn't as attentive as I should have been (hey, I was 21 http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ). I couldn't stop in time...the boat just pushed me, so I had to pull into the meadian and the angled grass just wedged me right into the steel median which screwed up the side of my stang. Worse than that, because of the slicks I was running for tires, I couldn't pull out of the median. People were idling by and just laughing at us two punks. I went from cool to fool in seconds. Been towing with a truck (and paying more attention ) ever since http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

YUP! The new 2003 is awesome! I bought a 2003 3/4 ton 4door with the Cummins and a SIX speed manual transmission to pull my 10,000 lb boat. I bought a manual so no trans to over heat. If you give it to much gas it will spin the wheels pulling the boat in second gear! I went 70mph coming from Mohave, No Sweat on the hills and remember I said 10,000 lbs. Boat! The brakes are big fat Disc and they stop well! I traded my 1996 3/4 ton 6.5 Turbo Cummins Suburban in and it blows that truck out of the water! The only draw back is I ordered it with 410 posi gears and you really don't want to cruise over 70 about 2200 rpm. I paid invoice 31600 so another 3% would have been COOL! Go drive one!

Add one of the Diesel Dynamics (http://www.dieseldynamics.com) True Torque Modules for another 65hp/150ft-lbs to the wheels for $549! HUGE improvement in power and around 10% better fuel mileage.
BTW, Buttbutter...My Dodge pickup arrives this weekend. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif Now I have a truck AND A BOAT!

Hey Aqua, if you think it's quick now, come get a box...I'll make you a wicked deal.
The "new" motor is a 2.5 260hp. Basically traded my 2.4 and my old midsection for the blown powerhead. It needs about 2k, but should make quite a bit more power. The 2.4 never made what it should have...couldn't get it to seat the rings. Don't plan to have that problem with this 2.5. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Guess I am keeping my Chevy. The dodge dealer wants to bend me over if I tade mine in and I have not got a single inquiry on my auto trader.com add. Plus after having one of the 3/4 ton crew cabs for a day last week I really do like my chevy better. The Dodge does have more power and torque but rides like shit compared to my truck with a lift kit in it.

Hey I know this thread is old but... If you have not bought the truck yet you might want to check out the new Dodge 2004 and a half. They decided to go whole hog and pump the Cummins up to 600 ft pounds of torque! This has to be the monster on the loose. I now have the 2001 Dodge 1 ton dually and I tow a Baja 38 Special with it. The boats 9600 pounds and the trailer is 3000 pounds ad fuel and water and beer http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I'm pushing the max rating of 13,400 pounds for the truck. I have the Cummins 5.9 24 valve turbo diesel and it has not given me the slightest of problems. The only thing I have done is go in for regular scheduled service. This is truely one amazing truck.
The new Dodge if far better as far as seating and rated tow maximum. Tow maximum is now 16,400 pounds and gross vehicle weight rating is 23,000 pounds http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif There was an article in the Las Vegas Review Journal on Feb. 27, page 3F. Chapman and Desert Dodge now has them on the lot to check out.
