The bad, my Essex has a crack in the hull that's going to take 4 weeks to fix and some serious $$$. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/glare.gif
At least I have a lot of good friends with boats that can haul my ass around the next month! Oh well. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
By the way JR, I think I saw your boat at Essex yesterday. Nice boat!

Bad news, sorry to hear it.
My wife is dead set on a new Essex 21' Sterling, although we likely won't buy for a few months. Is the crack a common problem with the brand? They told me they have a ten year hull-warranty, are they standing behind it?

A crack in the hull?? Where is it at??? Their hulls are literally bullett-proof. I guess in this case it's not. Sorry to hear about that.

They make a great boat, one of the best constructed hulls I've seen. As for the warranty, I'm not sure where we stand on that. Between Essex and my insurance adjuster, I'm sure they will try to determine who needs to take responsibility.
I have no idea what happened. I have only had the boat 9 months and have not had any accidents in it. The crack is pretty far back - on the inside of one of the strakes and the bunk on the trailer hides it pretty well. You have to lie on your back underneath the boat to see it. I suppose it could have been there for some time. It does seem odd that with Essexs' layup that there would be a crack of this magnatude.
I'll keep you all posted.

A crack? Wow! I didn't think it was possible with an Essex hull. Someone must have dropped it off the trailed! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Any other damage around the area to indicate hitting something submerged? I was just under mine last Friday cleaning the underside of the hull for the first time in 3 seasons...not a mark except towards the bow where a little pitting is due, I'm sure, to beaching the boat in coves. I don't know if it's worth addressing, yet.

There are no stress cracks in the immediate area of the crack. Steve said there were a couple dings in the gel closer to the center of the keel.
Like I mentioned earlier, I haven't run the boat up on anything so I have no idea when or where this happened. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Steve and Alex are good guys so I'm hoping they will take care of me. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The issue of the crack in this hull is being addressed and they are working to find the sourse of the problem. Extreme trailers has also been contacted and the true root of the problem is going to be found. Essex has always stood behind their product and always will, but being in bussiness for myself, I understand their hesitation in just fixing the fracture before the cause is found. I hate to hear that you have experianced a problem of this magnitude with your boat, but Alex assured me that this is not a problem common to Essex boats. 99% of the time, it is found to be related to something else.
BTW: PLEASE DON'T TAKE THE ADVISE ABOUT THE THONG!

I wonder if this has anything to do with Essex recently deciding to go with Zieman for trailers and no longer use Extreme?
Everyone at Essex has always been awesome to work with, from the owners on down the line! And yes, they stand behind their product 100%
JR, good to hear about the swim step brackets. What did Alex end up doing?

He just made knotches in them so the drive shower would clear....I looks sweet... I really happy woth what he did... I drove the boat alot this weekend and no problems what so ever.....I noticed the trailers also and asked Alex, He said that Laser boats have used Zieman trailers for there boats and Essex seems to like them so now you have a choice on which trailer you can get... I still like the extream trailer better..

Hey Jr.,
I have quite a bit of new info concerning my boat but to be honest with you, I have been uncomfortable sharing that info with anyone until Essex and my insurance company were up to speed. My dealings with Alex have always been positive. However, I went to Essex last week to speak with them directly and share the surveyors report with them. I tried to speak with Steve, and he didn't have the time of day for me. He then directed me to speak with Howard who had started to work for them just five days earlier. And while he was respectful to me, he was in no position to answer much of any of my questions. Apparently Alex was not there at the time and needless to say, I was extremely frustrated. Here I was there trying to keep the ball rolling and keep a line of communication going, and got absolutley nowhere.
The surveyors report has identified the problem as "hull flex", probably from trailering, and he feels that it is clearly a warranty issue. To this date, I have been told by Alex that Essex does not agree with these findings.
The resaon that my boat was not at Essex this past weekend was that I decided to have another third party look at the boat and give me his assesment. Havasu Barney has done just that, and I will eventually share his findings with all of you once Essex/insurance co. have shared this info and communicated. I want to give Essex the time to do the "right thing".
The most frustrating part of this whole ordeal is that I, like many other Essex owners feel that they make one of the best boats in the industry. I'm just wondering at this point what their warranty covers.
That is about all I feel confortable saying at this point. I appreciate all of your concern for my situation, and will keep you informed down the line. Let's all hope for a positive outcome!
Kurt

As of last week, my insurance company said that Essex had not returned thier calls to discuss my situation further. So unfortunately, Essex has done nothing to remedy my problem. I have digital photos and a description of the problem from Havasu Barney that shows some bad glass around the strake.
I'm surprised that they are willing to have negative comments being circulated on the boards concerning their product, but at this point, they have not backed there warranty. The funny thing is, I still think they make a great boat. But why have a warranty if you're not going to stand behind it.
Anyway, thanks for your concern, 502. I will keep you all posted!

I don't know, I don't think I would buy another Essex, for various reasons. I think they make an excellent boat - rock solid, and I truly loved my boat and miss it, I just have other issues with them. My short list for my next boat is
Howard
Lavey
Elim
Ultra
Elim puts out the most boats so chances of me finding an Elim are much greater than the others, meaning I'll probably end up with an Elim.

I all truth my next boat won't be an Essex (if I were to decide today) simple 'cause they don't have a model in the size I am looking for that I like. The Bullet so far has the edge. Maybe with a 525 or Teague 600 since he's right next door. Both shops are within a coupla' miles of the house so I could almost watch it being built. Now...if only the Havasu house were completed so I could get on with boat shopping....... http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

E502 - My buddy (Dr. Margarita on Hot Boat forums) just bought the 25 Bullet from Howard. Very nice boat. I can't wait to drive that thing! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif He is putting a 496 HO in it and should see mid 70's. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif If you want a ride, he would be more than willing to give you one...it should be on the water in late August. Let me know and I can set you up with him.

HOLY SH!T, I'm caught up on this now. I remember scanning through it a while back but things have been pretty busy with the twins.
I'm sorry to hear about the crack Kurt! That's unfortunate. It does surprise me the difficulties you're having getting it fixed as well. It's even more surprising that they obviously know you're well known on the boards and would risk the not so positive comments.
Well, that will balance things out a bit then. Through LVHB they've gotten TONS of free positive publicity - I think there were 3 Essex boats in the Hot Boat article as well, maybe 4 showing, not too mention the 6000+ viewers a month and there's no shortage of Essex stuff around this site in the gallery and forums, that's for sure.
Hopefully things will work out and maybe the ins. co. can just get it taken care of for you.

Yeah...I was that thread on HB and would really like to try that boat on Havasu to see if it is big enough to handle the weekend chop! Thanks for the offer! We'll be in Havasu at least two weekends in August so it would only be a coordination thing. I love the look and performance potential of the Bullet.
P.S. Once you drive Dr. Margarita's boat you'll change your mind about eliminator! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Not a chance! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif I am very happy with my current boat and will have it for quite a while. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Unlike others on this board....I keep my boats for more than 1 or 2 years! http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
Mike - If you see posts about Dr. M's boat on the water and I forget about your wanting a ride....just remind me and I will set you up. http://www.lasvegashotboats.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

No exodus just that the middle sized Essex is Butt Ugly.
Wasn't the Lavey the boat the Hot Boat Magazine wouldn't name as the awful handling one they alluded to in an editorial?

When I spoke with Ty @ Lavey he had suggested that I get trim tabs with the boat. So who knows... I will have to research this further befroe in make up my mind.

I told Ron, owner of Essex, as much when he asked me what people were saying about the 25 Tempest. Personally the look has grown on me. If Essex stays true to form expect another new model next year or the year after.
Yes, that is what I heard that the Lavey. It was the one Hot Boat was talking about.
